Other Trails

If your idea of exploring is finding out of the way things in little known places - perhaps the Silo Trail is something that might interest you. Although the closest ones are a bit of a drive, they are well worth the effort.

The Community Mosaic Couch project brought together locals in bush-fire affected communities in the Northern Adelaide Hills to make mosaic patches that joined to form 'quilts' to adorn a trail of outdoor community couches.

Sharing skills, stories and laughter, people of all ages worked side-by-side on the projects, creating a unique and fun focal point for their communities and a legacy that is testament to their resilience. From the Adelaide Hills Council website.

The Mount Pleasant Community Association is currently working with Seeds of Hope to establish a Reflection Bench at Mt Pleasant.

Trails SA - a great website for a host of trails - walking, cycling, riding, canoeing - you name it.

MAWSON TRAIL

UNCOOL CYCLING - lots of great information about the Mawson and other trails.

AMY GILLETT SHARED TRAIL

(Please note: as yet, the bikeway finishes at Mt Torrens. The plan is for it to be completed to Mt Pleasant, but there is no timeline for this, although recently the Adelaide Hills Council again expressed a desire to push the completion.)

A Recreational path for bike riding, walking, jogging and horse riding. For all people to use and enjoy in safety, off the road. In 2009 the SA Government decided to name the trail the Amy Gillett Bikeway in memory of Amy Gillett.

The Amy Gillett Bikeway is built on a disused railway line, so it is relatively flat. The steepest part is from Charleston to Mt Torrens. When completed it will go from Oakbank to Mount Pleasant, through the towns of Woodside, Charleston, Mt Torrens and Birdwood. Currently it runs from Oakbank to Mt Torrens and is approximately 16 kms long. There are toilet facilities, coffee shops, playgrounds and tourist attractions in all towns. Please make the detours to the main streets of each town to enjoy their facilities.

KIDMAN TRAIL

Horse SA provides project management and facilitation for community education and related activities related to recreational horse trails, including conference management and educational resource development. Horse SA works in partnership with the Office for Recreation, Sport & Racing to oversee the management of The Kidman Trail.

The Kidman Trail is a multi-use long-distance trail traversing 269 kilometres of roadsides, forest tracks, private land and unmade road reserves with trail markers indicating the route. Trail enthusiasts will enjoy “seeing the world in a different way” through the Fleurieu Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, Murraylands, Barossa and Clare Valley tourism regions.

Rockleigh School house on the Kidman Trail.

There are still a few historic old buildings in Rockleigh, and every year there is a Carols night in December, to raise money for the RFDS. The Band of the S.A. Police donate their time and expertise for this wonderful night.

WALKING TOUR

Today’s township of Mount Pleasant is made up of the towns of Totness, Mount Pleasant and Hendryton. Settlers began living in the district in 1843, however it was later that the towns were surveyed.

Take some time to wander around and absorb the heritage buildings in the main street and beyond.

Clicking on the picture will give you a pdf brochure of the historic houses and buildings still remaining in Mt Pleasant, and an idea of those lost.

A leisurely stroll along quiet streets, can take as long or as little as you’d like.
