Although not all of our historic buildings survive, some still do and are in constant use - like our Tudor Revival Soldiers’ Memorial Hall. In the last decade, the Totness Mill has been restored and now functions as a Bakery and Hairdresser. The two historic Hotels are still in use, and although one of our Churches has been closed, St John’s still flourishes. Many beautiful old cottages line Melrose Street, and the State Heritage listed old Police Station now has an Air BnB component, where you can stay and browse the memorabilia, as well as investigate the cells and beautiful gardens. The facade of the old Elders Building - now known as Melrose House - has been restored, and the hedge of Ryecroft - the former Doctors’ residence has been removed, revealing the early 20th century frontage. What was once a general store is now Star Books and The Bohemian Garden gift shop. The former Mt Pleasant Council works building (behind the Library) is now - appropriately - Recreate, proving that every old building can have a useful purpose once its original use has finished. Even the old BankSA building (a good example of 60’s architecture) has been repurposed, and now functions as the Robber’s Dog Gin Distillery.
