Barossa Cookery Book as a political barometer

The cookbook contains quaint recipes for traditional dishes with a heavy focus on baked goods – cakes, biscuits and desserts. But it’s the recipes it doesn’t contain that are particularly fascinating. Join us as we explore the anti-German sentiment that prevailed in World War 1 and its effect on recipes and their inclusion.

Then listen as we outline the story of Tanunda’s Elizabeth Schrader and her compelling connection to the 1917 edition of the cookbook.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of the session and you are invited to join us for a light afternoon tea to mingle and chat further.

There will be three information sessions in total, with all three sessions starting with a brief outline of this iconic cookbook and its inception as a community fundraiser to support the establishment of a Soldiers Memorial Hall. The sessions will then take a deep dive into some of its more fascinating secrets. Each session will also shine a spotlight on historic recipe contributors and their stories as Barossa women and community members.
