In this clinic you will discover that everything you train and expect under saddle has a starting point on the ground. By understanding this starting point and how it progresses under saddle you can solve problem behaviour, remove frustration when you are working with your horse and improve your confidence.

SIGNIFICANT FOR: Spooky/anxious/nervous horses, young/green horses, horses with ANY behavioural or riding issue OR people keen to improve their horse training knowledge, skills and performance results.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
How to analyse and evaluate a horse’s behaviour and what it understands and what it can perform confidently
Strategies to improve a horse’s focus, learning and confidence
How to progress the benefits of ground work into under saddle training
How to overcome problems on the ground and in the saddle

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:

For ground work: Rope halter & 12-13ft lead rope (the greatest training tool anyone can have in their tack room), training stick & string or short lunge whip or training flag, gloves (recommended but optional), riding boots and protection boots/bandages (recommended but optional) for your horse including bell boots if your horse is shod.

For ridden work: Saddle, girth, saddle blanket, bridle, approved riding helmet, whip (if required), and riding boots.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
A pre-clinic Zoom call will be conducted a week prior to the clinic. In this clinic Shelley will discuss her process and what each participant would like to work on. This will allow plan for how each day will be organised as it will be tailored to the needs of the participants. Typically clinics involve individual and small group formats.

The clinic will run from approximately 8am to 5pm each day. Please arrive early on the first day to allow time for introductions, signing waivers, etc.

All participants are encouraged to observe the other sessions and participate in discussions. Your session can focus just on ground work, ground work and ridden work. However, any horse that is anxious or exhibits any problem behaviour will be required to have their first session in the round yard to assess their issues.

A presentation and discussion session will be held at lunch time each day.

A week after the clinic a second Zoom call will be conducted to discuss how everyone is going.

Lucy Williams is our instructor for the Training Day on October 1st 2022.

MCDC members can enter one lesson (to ensure all members have the opportunity to enter) and group sizes will be limited to a maximum of 3 riders.

Price per lesson = $45.00 plus the Nominate Fee (non-refundable).

All participants must be current MCDC members.

Entries are to be through Nominate - opening at 6am on Thursday 15th September. Entries close on Fri 23rd November (unless sold out beforehand)

Lucy is a British Horse Society Instructor (BHSI), holds her Level 3 International Equestrian Trainers Passport and has been coaching for 20 years. She worked for Christopher Bartle, coach to the German Olympic event team at the Yorkshire Riding Centre for many years. She has competed in numerous disciplines including eventing, team chasing (team cross country) and dressage, and loves coaching and helping people.

This one-day clinic has been developed for those who are wanting to set their youngster up from the beginning however it is also for anyone who is needing extra support and clarification with their ground skills.

Similar to our Foundation 1 clinic without the riding, students will learn practical applications and uses to build a steadfast relationship between you and your horse with confidence and understanding.

Focus will be on feel, timing and partnership with plenty of tools to take home and practice.

The Saturday class will explore the finer points of groundwork. Learn practical applications and uses to build a steadfast relationship between you and your horse with confidence and understanding. Focus will be on feel, timing and partnership.

The Sunday class will refresh day 1 then move onto ridden skills and follow on with the same guiding principles. The in-depth nature of this clinic will certainly improve your relationship with your horse.

This clinic is perfect for newly started/inexperienced horses with plenty of challenges for horses ready for partnership and refinement.

This course is however not just for youngsters. It is also a great way to create a platform for knowledge and understanding and create language with your riding horse of any age.

Get a great insight into the progression from the young horse to the more advanced and how to build soft feel and refinement right from the start.

Horsemanship for Teens

This school holiday clinic is especially for teenagers aged between 11-16 years who are wanting to further develop their horsemanship skills on the ground and in the saddle.

As always, Matt incorporates a strong focus on partnership and understanding the horse’s perspective as well as equine behaviour, leadership and confidence.

Skills will be covered in a fun, inclusive format with the awareness that young people tend to learn best while moving their bodies.
Students will be supported to feel good about wherever they are at within their horsemanship journey and to appreciate the value of working within a team through games and personal challenges.

Matt will cover some foundation and advanced principals with the goal of setting students up to create the language they wish to have with their horse regardless of the discipline they choose.

The day will consist of 3x 1.5-2hr sessions with a morning tea break and a lunch break.

Cost: $165pp
Auditors $30/day
