Learn to Service Your Lawnmower or Small Engine Workshop

Learn to Service Your Lawnmower or Small Engine Workshop

  • Evanston Gardens Community Centre (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Location: Evanston Gardens Community Centre, 63-65 Angle Vale Rd, Evanston Gardens
Bookings: No bookings required, just drop in between 9.30am and 11.30am

Learn how to keep your mower in tip top shape, and keep those carbon emissions low, at this free workshop.

Poorly performing engines can increase your carbon emissions, so ensuring your equipment is in good working order has benefits for the environment as well as your garden. Bring along your mower or whipper snipper and Gawler Repair Cafe fix-it whiz Kel Grayson will show you how to service it and keep it running well.

Presented by Gawler Environment Centre as part of Gawler Repair Cafe .

You may also like to bring an item along to be repaired, the cafe is open from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Available repairs include small electrical appliances, general repairs (mechanical/woodwork), mending (clothing and textiles), jewellery and bikes.

Further info: https://www.gawlerenvironmentcentre.org.au/event-gawler.../

Repair Cafes provide a free meeting space where community members can work with skilled volunteers to repair items that would otherwise go to waste. Our volunteers have skills in electrical repairs (small appliances), jewellery repairs, sewing and mending clothing, general repairs (mechanical/woodwork) and bikes. Services are provided free of charge but customers can choose to make a small donation to support the service if they wish.

Most attendees get to see a repairer straight away but coffee, tea and cake are provided to keep you occupied if you do need to wait.

How it all Works

– The repair café philosophy is to teach people how to undertake the repair themselves if possible. For that reason we ask that attendees sit with the repairer while the repair is taking place, so they can observe the process and have a go at it themselves.
– All repairs are conducted at the discretion of the repairer; if the repairer isn’t comfortable with conducting the repair, it won’t be undertaken.
– There are some items it isn’t possible to repair at the café e.g. microwave ovens and TVs retain charge and it is dangerous to attempt to repair them. We are also unable to do repairs that require larger “shed” type equipment e.g. welding.
– Repairers will fix one item per attendee. If there is time they may be able to look at a second item for you, but this will depend on whether others are waiting.
– We are focused on repairs as opposed to major alterations. E.g. we can help you darn a hole in a jumper, or repair a rip in a pair of trousers. If you have multiple items of clothing that need to be taken up or in, that is a job for a professional alterations service.
– Our repairers are skilled volunteers. They will try their best to fix your item but there are no guarantees.

If you would like any further information, or if you are interested in becoming a Repair Café volunteer, please contact GEC Coordinator Kathy on 0413 694 477 or coordinator@gawlerenvironmentcentre.org.au

Gawler Environment Centre is grateful for the support provided to this project by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science through the Communities Environment Program.

*New* Workshops at Gawler Repair Cafe

At the June 18 Repair Cafe we will also run a couple of workshops to further increase your repair and waste reduction skills! Booking information will be available soon, watch this space.

10am: Come & Try Visible Mending, with Margaret Crohn
Learn some basic skills to creatively combat those pesky rips and moth holes in your precious cloth. Techniques covered will include darning on woollens, patching on woven cloth, and needle felting on woollens. Bring along a couple of items to experiment on.

11am: Learn to Service Your Lawnmower (or other small engine), with Kel Grayson.
Bring along your mower or whipper snipper and Kel will show you how to service it to keep it in tip top shape. Poorly performing engines can increase your carbon emissions, so ensuring your equipment is in good working order has benefits for the environment as well as your garden.

Adelaide Festival of Climate Action

Adelaide Festival of Climate Action

The scale and pace of change to our climate has almost no precedent.

The last time CO2 was this high in our atmosphere was 2 million years ago when rich forests covered the Antarctic.

Immediate, deep and sustained change is needed.

To do this, we need everyone: old and young, people of faith, parents, business leaders, politicians, artists, you.

The latest report from the world’s leading climate scientists is clear: there is still hope.

There is still a narrow path to avoid a climate catastrophe.

But only if we act fast.

From now on every fraction of a degree matters

Every tonne of carbon matters
Every day matters
Every choice matters

The decisions we take and the actions we make today will resonate for centuries. The next few years will be the most consequential in human history.

What we do with it is up to each of us.

In the lead up to the COP 26 Climate Conference in Glasgow, come along to learn what you can do, be inspired and connect with others who want to make a difference.

We choose to come together because we can – on behalf of all those in isolation throughout the country and the world.

And we choose to come together because we must.

~~~~~~~
Join us for a family-focused weekend in Adelaide which will provide space to get people talking, connecting, and learning about this difficult problem in a supportive atmosphere while exploring actions we can take together.
Our vision is for an energising and hands-on festival that it will be inspiring and provide a chance to gather and make new friends and allies.
~~~~~~~

September 14 12.00pm - 2.00pm ACST

#StitchItDontDitchIt responds to fast fashion with the ‘joyful disruption’ of public mending.

If you think fast fashion is polluting the planet and contributing to the climate crisis, and you wish you could do something about it... join us 12-2 pm, September 14, outside H&M Rundle Mall for a festival of socially distanced mending.

All ages, all abilities, all genders welcome. Bring your mending, mask and a folding chair. We will form a line of menders down the middle of the mall.

Not sure why clothes matter in terms of climate crisis? There is a great explainer from the Climate Council here.
